One way to understand what motivates and deters burglars is to ask them. UNC Charlotte researcher Joseph Kuhns from the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology did just that.

Eight projects spearheaded by the Office of University Communications in the Division of University Advancement were recognized recently through the Hermes Creative Awards, given by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals.

The Charlotte 49ers will host the 2013 Atlantic 10 Baseball Tournament Wednesday, May 22, through Saturday, May 25, at Hayes Stadium.

The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation will host its annual Great Gold Rush Auction Saturday, June 1, in Halton Arena. This event is the largest single-day fundraiser held by the foundation; proceeds benefit the University’s athletic scholarship fund.

Matthew Johnson, a doctoral student in computer science in the College of Computing and Informatics, will defend “Exploring the Visualization of Student Behavior in Computer-based Education” at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 21, in Woodward Hall, Room 338. Tiffany Barnes is the dissertation advisor.

E.E. Balcos and John Allemeier from the College of Arts + Architecture joined Meg Whalen on the May 9 installment of “The Live Wire” to discuss “Deep Water: The Murder Ballads” that will be performed May 31 at the Knight Theater.

Graduate student Tammie Rosser recently teamed up with Charlotte Housing Authority and Studio 345 to create an intergenerational storytelling project. According to Rosser, who is working on a master’s degree in gerontology, the project was designed to bring older adults together with youth to share their experiences and talents across generations.

UNC Charlotte will honor former trustee Ruth Shaw for her support of education, her corporate leadership and her commitment to the community during the University’s spring commencement on Saturday, May 11. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service.

The UNC Charlotte Staff Council will hold elections for its executive board positions (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) along with representatives for 13 campus areas starting Wednesday, May 15. Online voting will be through Friday, May 24, via the Staff Council website.  

The Office of Disability Services recently presented its 2012-13 Outstanding Faculty and Staff Awards to five University employees for their “strong commitment to accessibility- and disability-related issues.”

Catherine Fuentes, a faculty member in the Anthropology Department in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, recently was awarded the Paul Farmer Global Citizenship Award from the Center for a Public Anthropology.
