Faculty and staff members can continue “Giving Green in the Community” by participating in a number of projects planned for National Volunteer Week, April 7-11. These projects, coordinated by the Community Relations Department in the Division for University Advancement, involve two- to four-hour commitments in the morning or afternoon.

Winners of the 14th Annual Graduate Research Symposium were named at the event, held Saturday, March 22, in the J.

Stephen Ward, executive director of University communications, will interview student, Timothy Roberts, about the UNC Charlotte Army ROTC program. He is the head senior training officer for the U.S. Army-49er Battalion and a management information systems major. Employees can watch “Live Wire” at their desk or on their mobile device starting at 2 p.m.

The Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City will display “Sustain Me Baby” Friday, March 28, through Thursday, June 26. Combining the work of two artists in different media, “Sustain Me Baby” examines the danger of plastics that cannot be recycled. An opening reception for the exhibition will be from 6 to 8 p.m., March 28.

The newly published “Visible Man: The Life of Henry Dumas” by English professor Jeffrey Leak has been praised for “shining a piercing light” on the elusive Dumas, who has remained a mystery even to his fans. Leak, through interviews with Dumas’ family and friends, along with writers who knew Dumas, examined the author’s life and writing.

Students from the Department of Dance will perform live with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, April 2, as part of the symphony’s Debbie Phillips Classical Concerts for Students. 

Hakim Touati, a doctoral student in computer science in the College of Computing and Informatics, will defend “Automated Meta-actions Discovery for Personalized Medical Treatments” at 9 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, in Woodward Hall, Room 338. Zbigniew Ras is the dissertation advisor.

The Office of International Programs will co-host an international career panel at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, at UNC Charlotte Center City, Room 902.

A Charlotte-based permanent supportive housing program is finding success in its efforts to improve stability for chronically homeless individuals while also helping the community to save money, according to a report from  UNC Charlotte’s College of Health and Human Services.

A UNC Charlotte freshman, Josh Helm, died Sunday, March 23, after a fall from the seventh floor of Moore Hall, a 12-story residence facility in South Village. UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety responded to the incident, which is still under investigation. John Bland, director of public relations, stated the death did not appear to be from foul play.

The film “The House I Live In” will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, in the Student Union, Room 340. A panel discussion will follow.
