At the recent 13th annual Graduate Research Symposium, the top two entrants in each category were recognized for their work. Awards were given for presentations as well as posters.
Regina Guyer, associate director of the IDEAS Center, was chosen as Sustain Charlotte’s Outstanding Educator; she was recognized recently at the second annual Community Sustainability Awards presentation for her efforts to aid Sustain Charlotte to realize “Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision for Our Region.”
As part of the University’s celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Multicultural Resource Center will host “The State of Asian Affairs in Charlotte” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, in Student Union, Room 200.
The Charlotte 49ers first spring game is slated for Saturday, April 20. In advance of the scrimmage, University leaders will host a town hall meeting at 3 p.m., Monday, April 15, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall, to discuss campus issues related to football game days. Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, Director of Athletics Judy Rose and others will cover various topics.
Students in the class “American Indians in Children’s Literature” will sponsor a book and bake sale on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16, on the lawn in front of the Fretwell Building.
Yi Shen, a doctoral student in computing and information systems in the College of Computing and Informatics, will defend “Structural Learning for Large Scale Image Classification” at 11 a.m., Friday, April 12, in Woodward Hall, Room 155. Jianping Fan is the dissertation advisor.
The annual UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale will be Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 21, at the McMillan Greenhouse.
A major fundraising event, the sale will feature a botanical extravaganza of wildflowers, trees and shrubs, perennials, carnivorous plants, orchids, tropicals and indoor plants.
During April, the UNC Charlotte Department of Theatre will present multiple free performances of “Mamá Goose,” a bilingual play for children (ages 3 to 7) and their families. Incorporating songs, rhymes, games and riddles in Spanish and English, “Mamá Goose” is based on the popular book “Mamá Goose: A Latino Nursery Rhyme Treasury/Un Tesoro De Rimas Infantile,” by Alma Flor Ada and F.
James Sweet, the Vilas-Jartz Distinguished Achievement Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss “Beyond Slavery: Africanizing Atlantic World History” at 5 p.m., Monday, April 8, in Denny Building, Room 200, as part of the 2013 Spring Colloquium on African Civilization sponsored by the Africana Studies Department.
