An energy engineer in facilities management, Josue Hurtado supports energy management usage around campus. Learn more about his role and how the campus community can help achieve the University’s sustainability goals. 

Can you describe your role?

As an energy engineer, I support the energy management usage around campus (electricity, natural gas, water, chilled water and hot water), perform cost analysis and support the strategic plan for University-wide energy needs. I perform building energy audits and identify mechanical problems impacting energy consumption; analyze heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting systems to determine optimum operating conditions and support the utility bill management program. I also review plans and designs for building construction and make recommendations regarding energy conservation and appropriate technology to ensure efficient energy and environmental compliance. 

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is being able to collaborate with the University environmental impact, reducing energy usage and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
 
How can the campus community help achieve the University’s sustainability goals and why is it important?

The campus community can help achieve the University’s sustainability goals by making smart use of campus resources. Saving energy and water is important because with recent climate changes we need to take action to protect the environment.

Where is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the Botanical Gardens.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I love to spend time with my daughter and my wife. I also like to watch sports and play video games.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

I’m from Dominican Republic, so I speak Spanish, and I love to dance bachata.
