Clare Short is making history at UNC Charlotte as the inaugural head coach of the 49ers women’s lacrosse team. Learn more about the University's newest athletic team and how to support them!

Why did you decide to become UNC Charlotte's inaugural women's lacrosse coach?

The growing sport of lacrosse really excites me. I’m so greatful more and more universities are adding the sport, and I wanted to be a part of making history at UNC Charlotte.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Seeing the success that my student-athletes have is the most rewarding part of my job. I love being their biggest cheerleader on and off the field. When we all work so hard to accomplish our goals, it’s so rewarding when we achieve the outcome.

What would you like the campus community to know about the women's lacrosse team?

The game of lacrosse will be new to a lot of people on and around campus, but I’m hopeful they’ll fall in love with the game as much as we have. It is a very fast-paced game that is entertaining to watch. There is a lot of goal scoring and back and forth competition.

How can the campus community support the team?

The campus community can support the team by coming out to our games next spring! We will have our first-ever competition at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025. Showing support will help our fan base grow and get the word out about this amazing new program.

What are you most excited about for the inaugural season?

I am most excited about seeing that first draw go up in the air. The draw is what starts the game, similar to a tip-off in basketball. It’s how we determine possession. We’ve been eagerly awaiting to hear that first whistle.

What are three words to describe UNC Charlotte?

Three words to describe UNC Charlotte are beautiful, passionate and lively.

What do you like to do when you aren't working?

I spend time with my family. I am blessed at home with my husband, D.J., and our three daughters, Callahan, Sloane and Leighton. It’s incredible seeing the world through their young eyes.

What's a fun fact about you many people may not know?

I have five siblings, and we all played college athletics.
