The Charlotte area experienced adverse weather Saturday night and into Sunday, but it is expected conditions will improve by midday Monday. As a result, please carefully review the information below.
Reminder: Regardless of the University’s operating condition, members of the University community should use good judgment about their ability to reach campus based on travel conditions where they are.
Monday Exams
- All exams scheduled to begin before 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10, have been moved to Friday, Dec. 14, at the same times and locations.
- Exams scheduled for 2 p.m. and later on Monday, Dec. 10, will continue as originally scheduled.
University Operating Condition
- The University will remain in Condition 2 (C2) suspended operations until 7:59 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10.
- The University will move to Condition 1 (C1) reduced operations at 8 a.m., Monday, Dec. 10.
- Normal operations will resume at noon, Monday, Dec. 10.
Friday Commencement
- The 1 p.m. commencement ceremony scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14, will be moved to 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14. The ceremony will still take place in Halton Arena.
- The Commencement Committee will provide additional information to affected graduates and commencement workers via email and commencement.uncc.edu.
If You Cannot Reach Campus Monday
Students
- Students who cannot make it to campus on Monday for their exams as scheduled should contact their professors directly to discuss possible accommodations.
- Students whose exams have been rescheduled are asked to please make every effort to attend at the new time. If, however, students have extenuating circumstances, they should contact their professors directly to discuss possible accommodations.
Faculty
- Instructors should discuss any travel issues and possible accommodations for exams with their department chair. Faculty members cannot cancel an exam, but they do have some flexibility in how the exam is administered. Refer to University Policy 202 regarding final examinations. Faculty requesting proctoring should email distanceed@uncc.edu for assistance.
Staff
- Non-mandatory employees should contact their supervisors to discuss how they will account for missed time.
- Ways to account for missed time include: Compensatory time (must be used if available), telecommuting, annual or bonus leave, making up time within 90 days or using leave without pay.
- Mandatory employees should report as directed by their supervisors.
Background on Decision
We understand the decision to move Monday morning exams to Friday may pose challenges for some of our students and their families. However, we must put the safety of all of our students and employees as our top priority in making these weather-related decisions. Our hope is moving the morning exams will allow students and employees the additional time needed to reach campus safely.
Moving Monday morning exams to Friday is not ideal, but all other days in the week are also full with other exams. When morning exams are moved to Friday, the logistics of still holding commencement at 1 p.m. become nearly impossible. In addition to traffic and parking difficulties, it is likely graduates could be scheduled for both commencement and an exam at the same time. And we could not have scheduled those exams during the last week of classes because we lost too many class days earlier in the year due to Hurricane Florence. We operate under a state regulation that requires a certain number of class days and we are not at liberty to alter that.
Simply canceling exams is also not possible. The University is required to administer final exams.
