The Governor’s Highway Safety Program has selected UNC Charlotte as the location for this year’s “St. Patrick’s Booze It and Lose It” awareness event, scheduled for Thursday, March 15.

The UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety Department is co-hosting this event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the front fields near the main entrance (near South Village).

Representatives from local, state and campus law enforcement agencies will be on hand to discuss the dangers of drunk driving. In addition, new driving simulators to help students understand the dangers of driving while under the influence will debut.

“The goal of this program is to reduce instances of drunk driving,” said Capt. Josh Huffman from the University’s Police and Public Safety Department.  “At this March 15 event, our students and the public will be able to interact with law enforcement, receive educational materials and experience new high-tech driving simulators.”

During St. Patrick’s Day weekend 2017, law enforcement agencies statewide cited more than 550 individuals for driving while under the influence and issued nearly 8,000 tickets for speeding or reckless driving.
