Even before Flipper, dolphins fascinated many people. They loved that the mammals were friendly and intelligent. Dolphins seem to enjoy interacting with swimmers and have been known to protect people under attack by sharks. Despite humans’ familiarity, most people are not well informed about how dolphins evolved, how they function and how they have interacted with humans for millennia.
English professor Alan Rauch used his experience working with and studying dolphins to author “Dolphin.” In this work, he explores dolphins’ propensity to live in pods and their modes of communication. The work also dives into the mammal’s zoology, as well as its social and cultural history, to offer a comprehensive view of these delightful creatures.

Rauch earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology; after which, he earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in literature. His continuing work in animal studies includes a new book about sloths.
