University to celebrate National Distance Learning Week

Friday, November 7, 2014

National Distance Learning Week is Nov. 10-14, and UNC Charlotte’s Extended Academic Programs Office is providing a one-stop resource for faculty to engage in dozens of free development opportunities sponsored by the U.S. Distance Learning Association. For students, they can attend a live “Google hangout” at noon, Thursday, Nov. 13, to share their insights on how to succeed as an online learner.

There are more than 1,200 student enrolled in fully online degree programs at the University. For fall 2014, there were approximately 435 course sections being delivered either online or in a hybrid manner. These account for nearly 10 percent of the total fall enrollment.

“Distance education (DE) students rarely play the role of just student. They are also your child’s teacher, your mother’s nurse and the engineer that is working to keep your neighbor’s company profitable,” said Shanna Coles, interim director of distance education and summer school. “We recognize and applaud the extra effort and resolve that our DE students demonstrate to make it to the finish line. It is the dedication of the UNC Charlotte faculty who work with our students to help them reach the goal of graduation.”
