University to celebrate LGBTQ History Month

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

The University’s Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) will host several discussions and activities in October in recognition of LGBTQ History Month and other topics of diversity.

MRC programs scheduled for this observance include:

Safe Zone 2.0 Training, 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, Student Union, Room 261

This program engages existing Safe Zone allies in conversations that deepen their knowledge about LGBTQ issues on campus and around the country. Brown bag-style talks led by experts help facilitate continuing education for allies on campus and broaden support for LGBTQ individuals.

Multicultural Leadership Conference, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11

Students will explore the intersection of multiculturalism and leadership with dynamic speakers and engaging workshops. Visit the Multicultural Leadership Conference for details.

Carolina Conference on Queer Youth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, Student Union

In its second year, the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth is a partnership among the MRC, Time Out Youth and the Charlotte Lesbian & Gay Fund.  It is designed to bring together K-12 teachers; school counselors; middle/high school and college students; community practitioners; and activists to discuss a wide range of topics centered on queer youth identity.

Friendly Peer Training, 5 to 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, Student Union, Room 200

This training is designed to educate undergraduate students about the lived experiences of LGBTQ individuals on campus.  Students should leave with a better sense of the lives of LGBTQ people, a list of campus resources and tools to become a better ally for LGBTQ people.
