UNC Charlotte will test its Whelen Alert sirens, PIER emergency text messaging and Alertus emergency alert software between 2 and 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 17.
At approximately 2 p.m., the Whelen Alert sirens will emit a loud siren tone followed by an audible message indicating that the alert is only a test. The PIER emergency text messaging and Alertus software will be activated at around 2:15 p.m. The Alertus software is connected to the PIER Emergency Alert System. In the event of a “red alert,” indicating an imminent threat to the campus community, the Alertus software would post a message containing emergency information on nearly 4,000 desktop computers and 400 plasma televisions/smart podiums on campus as well as on the University’s website.
During the Sept. 17 test, the Alertus message will indicate that a test of the UNC Charlotte Emergency Alert System is in progress. Individuals using smart podiums equipped with this software, need only “click” on the acknowledge button at the bottom of the test message (see below) and the alert will disappear. At the same time, a text message will be delivered to registered cell phones to indicate a test of the UNC Charlotte emergency alert system is under way. Texts will be sent to students, faculty and staff who signed up to receive them at emergency.uncc.edu prior to Monday, Sept. 15.
These tests occur periodically throughout the year as part of the University’s emergency preparedness program. This is only a test and should require no special action.
