University Convocation scheduled for Aug. 19

Monday, August 4, 2014

University Convocation, which traditionally marks the start of the academic year, will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. This annual event is an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about the University’s short- and long-term goals and plans.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Provost Joan Lorden will address faculty, staff and students.

In addition, Jim Kay, chair of the Staff Council, will give remarks; Greg Starrett from the Department of Anthropology will present the faculty agenda for the 2014-15 academic year.

Inside UNC Charlotte will broadcast Convocation via a live webcast.

During the event, new members of the faculty and professional staff are welcomed to campus, and faculty members granted permanent tenure and those beginning their 25th year of service are recognized. The recipient of the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professor in Teaching is named, too.

Faculty members who have been promoted to full professor also will be recognized; they are: Denis Arnold, Department of Management; John Daniels, Srinivas Pulugurtha and David Weggel, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Angela Davies, Nathaniel Fried,  Donald Jacobs and Thomas Suleski, Department of Physics and Optical Science; Lee Gray, School of Architecture; Henry Harris, Department of Counseling; Gabor Hetyei, Department of Mathematics and Statistics; Martha Kropf, Department of Political Science and Public Administration; Dennis Livesay, Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics; Stephanie Moller, Department of Sociology; Charlie Reeve, Department of Psychology;  Tony Schmitz and Qiuming Wei, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science; and Michael Turner, Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology.

A general faculty meeting in the form of a question-and-answer session with Dubois, Lorden and Starrett will immediately follow Convocation.  All members of the campus community are welcome to remain for the meeting.

The UNC Charlotte chapter of the American Association of University Professors will host a coffee reception for the campus community starting at 9 a.m. in the lobby outside McKnight Hall.
