‘Without a Fight’ screening, discussion scheduled

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

The Office of International Programs will host a screening of the documentary “Without a Fight” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

A feature length film, “Without a Fight” explores how soccer can facilitate social change in Kibera, one of East Africa’s largest informal settlements. The work provides a glimpse into an Africa few have seen; it attempts to break stereotypes associated with people who live in extreme poverty while depicting sports as a tool that could be used to prevent violence among at-risk youth.

Following the screening, Rye Barcott, co-founder of Carolina for Kibera, and executive director Hillary Omala will participate in a discussion. Carolina for Kibera is an international, nongovernmental organization based in Kibera, an area within Nairobi, Kenya. It is a program of the Center for Global Initiatives at UNC Chapel Hill

The documentary premiered at the 11MM Festival in Berlin, Germany, in 2012; its North American debut was at the Full Frame Documentary Festival in Durham.
