'Feminist Coming Out Day' to focus on impact of feminism

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

"Feminist Coming Out Day," Monday, March 24, will provide an opportunity to discuss what it really means to be a feminist. Sponsored by the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC), the day’s programs will cover the true definition of feminism, the male role in feminism and feminists throughout history. All events are free and open to the public.

Rashona Sharpless, graduate assistant for the MRC, said, “Most importantly, we want to dispel the negative myths that surround feminism. Because of the negative light that often surrounds feminism, people are hesitant to embrace being a feminist.”

The March 24 Feminist Coming Out Day programs will include:

  • “Let’s Talk About It: Feminism” at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 340; attendees will discuss what it really means to be a feminist
  • “What Men Think About Feminism” at 2 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 340; participants will explore men’s involvement in feminism with a panel discussion
  • “Wonder Women” will be screened at 7 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 340, followed by a panel discussion. The documentary will investigate the untold story of American superheroines and the legacy of Wonder Woman

Feminist Coming Out Day is one of the many events the MRC celebrates during Women History Month.
