Africana studies to host visiting scholar

Friday, March 14, 2014

The Department of Africana Studies will host Aderemi Ajala, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, from March 17 through April 7.

An expert in health and political anthropology, Ajala is author/editor of three books, 22 journal articles and 10 chapters in anthologies. His publications include “Rural Health Provisioning: Sociocultural Factors Influencing Maternal and Child Health in Osun State, Nigeria.” His articles have appeared in Anthropos, the Journal of Environment and Culture, African Anthropologists and Journal of Social Sciences. He has written on child and maternal health, aging, HIV/AIDS, African knowledge systems in health and medical practices, sexual and reproductive health, as well as health education.

According to Akin Ogundiran, chair of Africana studies, the visit resulted from endorsement by UNC Charlotte and the University of Ibadan to create an institutional linkage and collaboration that focused on the issues of health, sustainable environment and culture. The Africana Studies Department offers a concentration in health and environment as part of its bachelor’s degree program.

The Office of the Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the Office of International Programs, in part, are funding Ajala’s visit.

Members of academic units/departments who are interested in meeting with Ajala or hosting a presentation on his research should email Ogundiran at ogundiran@uncc.edu.
