Cone Plaza transformation under way, to reopen this summer

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

By summer 2014, students, faculty and staff will be able to enjoy the outdoors again around Cone University Center Plaza.

The plaza area, completed in the mid-1970s as part of a $2 million expansion to the Cone University Center, has been cleared of the wooden decking and structures. Currently, repairs to structural elements, new waterproofing, new pavers and planters are in progress, with an estimated completion of July.

"With an integrated design that combines an appealing ambience and comfortable outdoor furniture, the renovated Cone Plaza will provide the University with a flexible space that can be used for informal gathering, study, programs and activities, " said Jerry Mann, executive director for the Student Union and Cone University Center.

Officials expressed appreciation with the campus community’s patience as the work gets under way. This phase has required a “considerable amount of logistics due to high traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) with multiple users of the loading dock area where structural repairs are to be made,” stated Doug Walters, facilities management construction manager.

Donna Merck, associate director of operations for Cone University Center, said, “The new design will enhance the use of space and seating so events continue with additional improvements, including lighting, power and Wi-Fi."

Sutton-Kennerly Associates designed the plaza project, and Barton Malow Company is completing construction.
