CHHS to host nationally renowned expert on the politics of food

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

The College of Health and Human Services will host acclaimed thought-leader Marion Nestle for an engaging conversation on the politics of food and food choice, at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

Nestle’s presentation “Food Politics: From Personal Responsibility to Policy Advocacy” is expected to offer an eye-opening look at the food industry and the economic, political and social influences on food choice in America.

A professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University, Nestle is known for her prolific views on food policy and for being an extraordinary force in shaping the way people think and talk about food. She is recognized for the groundbreaking book “Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health,” as well as several other works, including “Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety” and “What to Eat,” which was named as one of Amazon’s top 10 books of 2006 and a “Must Read” by Eating Well magazine. In 2013, Nestle was featured in the documentary film “A Place at the Table.” Her most recent book is “Eat Drink Vote: An Illustrated Guide to Food Politics.”

This free, public event is part of the TIAA-CREF-sponsored UNC Charlotte Distinguished Lecture Series, which brings notable speakers to engage the University and broader community in robust discussion of nationally important issues. The event will include a book signing opportunity.

Seating is limited, and advanced registration is required via the Web.

Earlier in the day, Nestle will be on campus for a student presentation at 1 p.m. in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 281.
