Faces - Tim Carmichael

As a staff member in the Belk College of Business, Tim Carmichael wears two hats, so to speak. He’s executive director of information technology and facilities operations for the college.

“Part of this work involves strategic and long-term planning in both areas, as well as managing the day-to-day operations,” said Carmichael. “I also interact regularly with ITS to ensure the college is on track with the overall IT goals for the University.”

Carmichael serves on about a dozen campus-wide committees and represents the Belk College on the national Technology in Business Schools Roundtable. Also, for the past two years, he has been the college champion for the annual Giving Green Campaign.

From the IT standpoint, Carmichael manages the team that provides customer support to faculty, staff and students for the Belk College.

“My team does almost everything related to IT. Beyond providing general IT support across the college, we create and support custom applications within the college,” Carmichael explained.

In managing facilities operations, Carmichael oversees a team that keeps the building functioning. He assumed the responsibilities in 2013 following the death of veteran employee Jon Finn. Recently, he and his team have planned and executed several projects within Friday Building, including two new Ph.D. classrooms.

A native of Winston-Salem, Carmichael began his UNC Charlotte career in February 1998. An alumnus of the University, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. While working for the University, he completed a Master of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in information security. From an initial position as a server administrator in the Receiving and Stores Department, Carmichael moved to the ITS Help Center before starting in the Belk College as a technology support analyst in 2005. He became director in 2009.

Work assignments have Carmichael doing something different from day-to-day, but that makes the job more interesting. Also, he has the chance to work with diverse, interesting people. “In my role, I have positive interactions with virtually everyone with whom I work. Either I’m planning projects with others in the college or across campus or working to resolve an issue. I really enjoy it.”

Another positive experience has been serving as the Belk College of Business Giving Green champion. “It’s great to be part of a program that benefits the University and greater community. We have so many faculty and staff that support the campaign financially, but they also give of their time throughout the year for various causes they consider important to them.”

When not on the job in the Friday Building, Carmichael might be playing volleyball in a local recreation league. With family still around Winston-Salem, he spends free time with them, too. A motorcycle enthusiast, Carmichael enjoys taking excursions with his father and uncle. They’ve traveled throughout the Southeastern United States, including New Orleans and the Florida Keys.
