Music Department to host Brazilian conductor for residency

The Department of Music will host Brazilian conductor Marcelo Jardim for a week-long residency starting Monday, Feb. 17.

 Among his residency activities are two public events on campus: a lecture on Brazilian music on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and a performance of Latin American music by the UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble on Friday, Feb. 21.

Jardim is director of bands and conductor of the Rio de Janeiro Federal University Wind Orchestra, where he also teaches graduate wind conducting. He also serves as artistic director of the Brazilian National Band System, in Funarte (National Fine Arts Foundation) and the artistic director of the Mogi das Cruzes Symphony Orchestra Association, coordinating all projects of the institution, including the Youth Symphony Orchestra, Band Program and Children’s Choir.

As a guest conductor and adjudicator throughout South and Central America, Europe and the United States, Jardim maintains a concert schedule of more than 30 performances a year with groups all over the world. He also is committed to projects that use music to foster social and cultural inclusion.

During his residency, Jardim will give a master class for conducting students, meet with band directors from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, conduct the Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble and rehearse extensively with the UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble.

His free  Feb. 18 lecture “Style and Influences in Brazilian Music,” is at 2 p.m. in the Rowe Arts Building Recital Hall. 

The Wind Ensemble concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Feb. 21, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, will feature music from Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. Tickets are $6 for general admission, $5 for UNC Charlotte faculty and staff and for seniors and $4 for students.
