Botanical Gardens to hold annual Valentine’s Day Orchid Sale

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

The University Botanical Gardens’ annual Valentine’s Day Orchid Sale will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, through Saturday, Feb. 15, at the McMillan Greenhouse.

The yearly event is a popular one with the community, according to Paula Gross, assistant director of the Botanical Gardens. “Orchids are truly fascinating flowers that last longer than roses, so they make the perfect choice for a Valentine’s Day gift.”

Throughout the sale, the McMillan Greenhouse will be open for attendees to view the various collections on display. Experts will be available to answer questions about the variety of healthy, blooming orchids well-suited to home environments.

At noon, Wednesday, Feb. 12, there will be a free “lunch and learn” on the basics of orchid growing in the McMillan Greenhouse classroom; attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch to enjoy during the talk.

Orchid prices will range from $15 to $40 at the sale; other indoor plants that are part of the sale will be priced from $7 to $15. Cash and checks will be accepted.

Proceeds from the sale support Botanical Gardens operations.
