University to observe ‘Go Red for Women’

Thursday, January 30, 2014

“Go Red for Women” is the American Heart Association’s national movement to increase awareness about women and heart disease. It is observed in February, which is national Heart Month.

As part of the “Go Red” effort, the College of Health and Human Services, Graduate Public Health Association (GPHA) and the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness are sponsoring a number of events in conjunction with the American Heart Association. According to the association, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined.

On Monday, Feb. 3, members of the Graduate Public Health Association will give away heart-healthy items between 1 and 5 p.m. in the Student Union Rotunda.

The GPHA will host a “Wellness Jeopardy” competition at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the Student Union, Room 340B.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the movie “Just a Little Heart Attack” will be screened in the Student Union Movie Theater at 5 p.m.; attendees will learn more about heart health.

Members of the campus community are encouraged to participate in a heart walk around campus with the GPHA starting at 1 p.m. on Craver Road (at the crosswalk between the College of Health and Human Services and the Student Union).

Friday, Feb. 7, is national Wear Red Day; faculty, staff and students are asked to wear red in support of the Go Red for Women initiative.

Faculty and staff are invited to attend a “heart smart” lunch and learn sponsored by the ACCEHW; this event will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 200.
