Graduating seniors acknowledge supportive faculty, staff

Recently, more than 600 faculty and staff members received thank you notes based upon nominations from graduating seniors.

According to the Office of Academic Services, 1,643 students nominated 631 faculty and staff members as the one person at UNC Charlotte who made the most significant, positive contribution to their education. The question was part of the 2012-13 Senior Survey.

Nominees represented 81 departments, centers and offices across campus, said Cindy Wolf Johnson, associate provost for academic services.

“Some students nominated more than one individual, and various individuals were nominated by 10 or more students,” Johnson stated. “Many of those chosen were considered role models to our students. Our faculty and staff challenged the students to think creatively and achieve their goals. Availability and engagement inspired the students to succeed, even if it meant unexpectedly adding a minor or changing their major.”

Students also expressed an appreciation for “knowledgeable teachers who were enthusiastic about their topic.”

After naming the individual, one student explained that the professor “was so eager to teach us everything and had such great enthusiasm.”  Another student added that his professor’s “attitude when he walks into class every morning just makes you ready to learn something new.”

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois sent postcards to congratulate the nominated faculty and staff members. For departments nominated, chairs or directors received recognition via email along with a certificate to share with their team.

Johnson noted reaction to the postcards and emails were positive, with one individual stating he was “shocked, honored and humbled by the good news.” Others were grateful to know that they were chosen by their students.

“The cards are a small token of appreciation for the amazing work that these 631 faculty and staff do each day to touch the lives of our students,” said Provost Joan Lorden. “The sheer number of people named tells a story about the campus community. It is this type of community that allows our students to grow and develop as contributing members to our society.”

Dubois added, “I think everyone can agree that we don’t say ‘thank you’ enough to the many hardworking members of the faculty and staff who are so important for ensuring that our students are successful. I’m very glad to be able to add my pat on the back to those provided by the students.”
