Faculty Jazz Quintet to perform the music of Horace Silver

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

The Department of Music Faculty & Friends Concert Series will present the Faculty Jazz Quintet at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Belk Theater of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.

The quintet, comprised of Will Campbell, saxophone; Mike Hackett, trumpet; Noel Freidline, piano; Ron Brendle, bass; and Rick Dior, drums; will perform a tribute to pianist Horace Silver.

Born in 1928, Silver began his career with Stan Getz. Later, he played with luminaries such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. In the early 1950s, he joined drummer Art Blakey to form the Jazz Messengers and was a key figure in the development of hard bop. Silver formed his own quintet in the late ’50s and wrote a number of pieces that have become jazz standards, including "Song for My Father" and "The Preacher." The Jan. 28 program will include "Nica's Dream" and "Summer in Central Park" among others.

Tickets are $9 for general admission; $7 for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens; and $6 for all students. They can be purchased at the Robinson Hall Box Office or call 704-687-1849.
