January academic advising workshops scheduled

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

The Office of Academic Services offers free workshops to University advisors on a variety of topics. Faculty and staff academic advisors have three sessions available to attend during January. Participants are requested to email academic services at academicservices@uncc.edu with the name of the session(s) they plan to attend.

“Graduation-oriented Advising” will be held from 11 to 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 124. A new offering this year, this session will discuss the importance of looking beyond the current or next semester to focus on graduation when advising students early in their UNC Charlotte experience. It will address the philosophy behind graduation-oriented advising and offer insights and strategies based on practical experience. John Smail, dean of University College, and Susan Hodge from the Criminal Justice and Criminology Department will facilitate.

“Getting the Most Out of Niner Adviser” will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Friday Building, Room 280. Laiko Quintero from the University Advising Center and Sue Spaulding from the Department of Psychology will lead this introduction to the University-wide, online, appointment-scheduling and advising notes database. Attendees will learn to schedule advising appointments, record advising notes, upload documents into student files, access advising notes and documents from the student’s previous advising sessions (even from another college/department), among many additional features.

“Understanding the Basics of Advising” will be held from 2 to 2:45 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29, in Friday Building, Room 106. This session will define what good academic advising should be, and how advising fits into the institutional mission of the University. Karina Franco from the Belk College of Business and Henrietta Thomas from the University Advising Center will facilitate.
