Holiday book drive collects 400-plus donations

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Prior to winter break, the University Advancement Division’s Community Relations Department sponsored a book drive to benefit Nathaniel Alexander Elementary, a Governor’s Village School. In the two weeks prior to holiday break, more than 400 books were collected for children in grades kindergarten through five.

Lauren Bell, Alexander Elementary principal, said, “We are grateful to be partners with UNC Charlotte on a number of initiatives and projects benefitting both schools. However, the recent book drive will aid and inspire students for years to come. Our students and teachers are so excited. We truly appreciate this.”

The initiative is one of many in an ongoing partnership between UNC Charlotte and the Governor’s Village Schools. Nathanial Alexander is one of four schools located less than two miles from campus. Schools in the village are all named for former North Carolina governors; other schools are Morehead Elementary (a STEM academy), James Martin Middle and Vance High.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Community Relations Department will host an event for the campus community to learn more about the collaboration and how to get involved.  An email will be sent to all full- and part-time faculty and staff. Email Jenny Matz at jenny.matz@uncc.edu with any questions.
