Annual ‘Vagina Monologues’ presentation scheduled

Thursday, January 9, 2014

Members of the UNC Charlotte community will perform in the Office of Women’s Programs’ production of “The Vagina Monologues” scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30, through Saturday, Feb. 1, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday with a 1 p.m. show on Saturday.

“The Vagina Monologues” is a series of speeches recited by different participants based on creator and author Eve Ensler’s interviews with 200-plus women around the world. The collection features hilarious and powerfully moving tales of real-life experiences women face; topics range from sex, love and orgasm to rape, violence and female genital mutilation. The monologues have the recurring theme of female empowerment and individuality. Well-known women, such as Kate Winslet and Whoopi Goldberg, have taken part in performances of “The Vagina Monologues” since its debut in 1996.

Princess King, assistant director for minority student support and women’s programs, stated the performances are an “amazing opportunity to raise awareness to end violence against women.”

Tickets are $10 and are available online. All proceeds from the event benefit Safe Alliance, which provides hope and healing to people in crisis.
