Annual 5K fundraiser supports scholarships, American Red Cross

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

The 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health, is scheduled for 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Belk Track and Field.

The 2014 5K will honor kinesiology lecturer and aquatic director Roy Fielding, who suffered a massive heart attack in December 2007. He recovered to walk in the 2008 5K, and each year since, Fielding has helped to raise awareness about heart disease. Proceeds from the 49er Gold Rush 5K provide student development scholarships, and direct donations are accepted for the American Red Cross.

Kemet Gatchell, 49er Gold Rush 5K director and member of the Recreational Services Department, said the event is enjoyed by year-round runners and couch-to-5K participants as the date coincides with prospective participants’ New Year’s resolutions.

A record 724 individuals participated in the 2013 race, which raised $5,024 for UNC Charlotte student development scholarships. The event also generated much-needed donations for the American Red Cross to aid with Superstorm Sandy relief.

Registration is open to the campus and greater Charlotte community. UNC Charlotte students who register before the early bird deadline (Jan. 14) will receive a student discount. Participants who register by the early bird deadline are guaranteed a long-sleeved commemorative T-shirt, too.

There are numerous age group awards along with those for top students, faculty/staff, alumni and community. Runners and walkers can enjoy both pre- and post-race refreshments. According to long-time participant and associate vice chancellor for student affairs Ted Elling, “It’s a challenging course because of the hills, but it’s a great way to see some of the landscape of the ever-changing UNC Charlotte campus.”
