Rowe, Storrs galleries to hold opening receptions for new exhibits

Monday, January 6, 2014

The College of Arts + Architecture’s galleries in Rowe and Storrs buildings will hold joint opening receptions for new displays from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15.

“CONSTRUCT(S): Isaac Payne and Matthew Steele,” presented by the School of Architecture, will be exhibited Wednesday, Jan. 8, through Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the Storrs Building gallery.

The display features the newest works of Isaac Payne and Matthew Steele as they explore architectural constructs as a point of departure or systematic outcome. In Steele’s work, the jig generates the sculptural form.  In contrast, Payne uses details of existing architecture as inspiration for two-dimensional works that create their own atmosphere and imply trajectory. Both artists live in Charlotte. Payne teaches painting at Central Piedmont Community College; Steele is creative services manager at the McColl Center for Visual Art.

The Department of Art and Art History will present “Erik Waterkotte: An Abridged Equinox” and “Dis(play)ced: A Solo Exhibition by Mary Tuma” from Monday, Jan. 13, through Friday, Jan. 31.

Using print and mixed media, assistant professor Erik Waterkotte explores the myth and magic found in popular culture –Utopia, religious extremism and cults, rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal music, alchemy and mysticism. Associate professor Mary Tuma’s work addresses issues of the transformation of the body and the spirit through the use of clothing forms applied to found objects or placed within a contextual environment, evoking a feeling of loss or distant memory.

Both galleries will host free, public talks with the artists on Jan. 15. Payne and Steel will speak at 5:30 p.m. in the Storrs Building gallery; Tuma and Waterkotte will talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Rowe Arts Building gallery.
