University to test emergency lockdown system

Thursday, January 2, 2014

In the event of an emergency, the Police and Public Safety Department (PPS) can initiate a computerized campus lockdown of all University facilities, including UNC Charlotte Center City.

At 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, PPS will conduct a test of its lockdown capabilities. This test will be a direct simulation of the lockdown procedures PPS would employ in the event of an emergency, such as an active shooter on campus.

As part of the test, a PPS official will press a button in the University’s Emergency Communications Center that will instantly lock the vast majority of campus buildings’ exterior doors, as well as those at UNC Charlotte Center City.

During the test, individuals will be able to exit through exterior doors; however, all entry will be denied. This will include all swipe card access to exterior doors.

Officials anticipate the test to take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. At the conclusion of the test, doors should return to their normal operation.

PPS conducts such tests throughout the year as part of the University’s emergency preparedness program. This is only a test and should require no special action. Email Lt. Brian Thomas, Police and Public Safety Department, at bsthomas@uncc.edu with questions regarding this test.
