Education students participate in ‘Book in a Bag’

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Students from the College of Education recently were part of the service-learning project that supported homeless children in the greater Charlotte community.

Through “Book in a Bag,” multicultural education students used class time to decorate bags that were donated along with books to children residing in homeless shelters and at the hospital.

According to Latricia Boone, communications director for the College of Education, the project was designed to provide an opportunity for the students – future teachers and educators - to get involved in the community and connect with diverse and/or underrepresented communities.

As part of the initiative, the students identified a multicultural children’s literature book to be used as inspiration for decorating the bags. Completed bags and books were delivered by a group of the students to a local charity that serves homeless families.  The UNC Charlotte students will write reflections that detail their experiences with the project.
