Step Afrika! to perform on campus

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

The group Step Afrika! will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.

A professional stepping company, Step Afrika! blends dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance and other dance and art forms. Through these dances, Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding.

The University’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) is sponsoring this free, public event. Morgan Conover, director of CAB Live, said, “Faculty, staff and students should come out to Step Afrika! because it’s a fun, electrifying show with a great mission.”

Conover added that people who attend the event will learn the history and roots of where stepping came from. “They will learn about how stepping is a cultural experience, not just about sorority and fraternity life.”
