The College of Education’s annual Bob Barret Distinguished Lecture on Multicultural Issues in Counseling will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Cone University Center, Room 210, and on Friday, Oct. 25, the Counseling Department will sponsor the conference “Multicultural Perspectives on Counseling.”
Moises Serrano and James Bazan will speak at the the Barret Lecture event “When Dreams Don’t Come True: Immigration and Higher Education.” Serrano will discuss his personal story as he pursues his dream as a first-generation immigrant youth; Bazan, a sociology instructor at Central Piedmont Community College, will talk about the impact of deportation policies on families and college access policies for undocumented youth and mixed-status families.
The Multicultural Issues in Counseling workshop offers participants up to 10 continuing education unit (CEU) hours by attending the Thursday night lecture and Friday’s workshop, reading two journal articles and completing a response.
