While students moved into Belk Hall this fall, the University formally dedicated the facility this week. It honors a staunch University supporter.
“Once again, we celebrate the continued growth of our University,” said Chancellor Philip L. Dubois at the dedication ceremony. “As we grow, we become, increasingly, a vital resource for the Charlotte region. This beautiful new residence hall will be the centerpiece of experiences and memories that change thousands of lives. We are grateful for the strong sustaining friendship of the Honorable Irwin Belk, who, along with his family, continues to strengthen the foundations of our University community through his faithful generosity.”
Carl Belk, chair of the board of Monroe Hardware and the Irwin Belk Foundation, followed his father in service to UNC Charlotte. He supported a number of University initiatives as a member of the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees. Currently, he is on the UNC Charlotte Foundation Board of Directors.
Designed primary for upper-class students, Belk Hall is a 429-bed facility that offers a blend of apartment and suite units. Common areas feature study rooms, casual lounges and community kitchens. Edifice Inc. served as general contractors for the roughly 178,000-square-foot, $34 million project.
B elk Hall is adjacent to Miltimore and Wallis halls, named for Ike Belk’s daughters, Irene Belk Miltimore and Marilyn Belk Wallis.
