The University Career Center’s annual Majors Day, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17, is an opportunity for students to explore all of their academic options, including majors, minors, concentrations and certificates.
Representatives from all of the University’s colleges and departments will be at Majors Day to talk with students about their respective programs. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cone University Center Lucas Room.
Students will be able to visit the “advising room” to talk one-on-one with an academic advisor from the University Advising Center or a career advisor from the University Career Center, during the event. Students who wish to declare or change their major or minor may be able to do so on-the-spot.
According to the Career Center, Majors Day is an excellent way for departments to increase awareness of their programs. In the past four years, all of UNC Charlotte’s departments have been represented at this annual event. Some students who attend may want to declare a major or minor, so departments should send staff and faculty who can approve change of major requests. Departments that are not accepting new applications should attend as the event is an excellent opportunity to educate students and answer questions.
Brooke Brown, senior assistant director for publicity and outreach for the Career Center, said departmental participation makes a difference to students. “Even though variables can’t be isolated, it’s interesting to note that the one-year retention rate for freshmen attending past Majors Day events has been above the retention rate of the class as a whole. Majors Day seeks to increase students’ motivation toward career planning and decision making, and, based on feedback from prior events, it does just that for 82 percent of participants.”
