Michele Taing, College of Health and Human Services; Diana Hill, internal audit; and Chea Smith, research and economic development; were the August weekly winners of the Air Quality Summer Raffles sponsored by the IDEAS Center.

Seon-Yi Han, a civil engineering student, was the monthly “fill up your gas tank” contest winner.

“Thanks to everyone who participated this summer by staying on campus for lunch and not driving during the hot summer days, and those who chose to fill up gas tanks while it was cooler in the mornings and evenings,” said Karyn Williamson-Coria, an administrative support associate with the IDEAS Center/Environmental Assistance Office.

The summer raffles were an incentive to encourage faculty and staff members to reduce pollution on Air Quality Action Days. The North Carolina Division of Air Quality uses a color code system to identify ozone conditions when the air quality is unhealthy for children, active adults and those with heart or respiratory disease, such as asthma. Codes Orange, Red or Purple are designations of increasing levels of unhealthy air quality and are considered Air Quality Action Days.

The center also facilitated the campus’ involvement with the N.C. Air Awareness “Race to the Beach.” This challenge focused on participants who selected a “clean” commute to work at least 16 times, with a grand prize raffle drawing for a weekend trip to Wrightsville Beach.

UNC Charlotte participants in the “Race to the Beach” were eligible for a local prize; Chris Alspaugh, extended academic programs, won a $25 Lowe’s gift card.
