Jeffrey Bortz, professor of Latin American history at Appalachian State University, will present "Democracy and Dictatorship in Latin America" at 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 147.

The Department of Global, International and Area Studies; the Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Studies; and the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences; are cosponsoring this free, public event.

The talk coincides with the 40th anniversary of Augusto Pinochet's coup in Chile. Bortz, who was living in Santiago at the time, was arrested, tortured and nearly killed. Subsequently, he became an economics and history professor at several universities in Mexico, and since 1989, has taught at Appalachian State University.
