COE to hold annual Child and Family Development Conference

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

The UNC Charlotte College of Education Child and Family Development Program will present the 34th annual Child and Family Development Conference “Playing Around:  Using Play as a Focus for Intentional, Collaborative Learning” on Friday, April 5, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

Keynote speakers will be Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, the Stanley and Debra Lefkowitz Professor in the Department of Psychology at Temple University, and Heath Morrison, superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Hirsh-Pasek serves as director of the Infant Language Laboratory. Her research in the areas of early language development and infant cognition has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and Human Development.

Morrison is a nationally recognized leader in education, who has been recognized with the Distinguished Educational Leader Award from the Washington Post, the Nevada Superintendent of the Year and the American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year.

Conference participants will be able to choose from a number of workshop sessions. This annual event attracts teachers, administrators, parents and members of professional agencies that focus on children and families.

“This year’s conference is especially important as we face more and more scrutiny in an economically challenged time to convey the importance of a child’s play and development, while answering the call for accountability and achievement,” said conference organizer Deana Murphy.

Cost to register is $75; full-time UNC Charlotte students may attend at no charge; cost to attend for other students is $35. Onsite registration will be available at the conference. Registration includes parking. More information is on the Web.
