Panel to discuss groundbreaking Title IX legislation

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

UNC Charlotte’s women’s basketball team has powered its way to a 24-4 overall record this season, which matches its best finish in school history. The roots of this success is due in part to the landmark Title IX legislation passed more than 40 years ago.

“Title IX: Past, Present and Future,” a panel discussion sponsored by the Center for the Study of the New South, will focus on this pivotal law. This free, public event, part of the center series Sports in the New South: Culture, Color and Cash, will be at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

Panelists will be Jesh Humphrey from the Office of Legal Affairs, and Krystion Obie Nelson, American studies. Dan Grano, communication studies, will moderate the discussion.

“Sports reflect cultural patterns,” said Jeffrey Leak, director of the Center for the Study of the New South. “Sports can serve as a springboard for community discussions. In this series of events that will continue through the fall of 2013, we will take a look at sports from a wide array of community perspectives.”

The March 20 event will look at the groundbreaking Title IX legislation, its history and its impact on sports at UNC Charlotte. Panelists will discuss Title IX in terms of the law, the experiences of student athletes and the larger cultural questions about women and gender in American society and the South in particular.
