Symposium to focus on legal issues in higher education

The Office of Legal Affair will host the inaugural Symposium on Legal Issues in Higher Education from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, Salons D and E.

Peter Romary, director of student legal services at East Carolina University, will be the kenote speaker; his presentation will be "Risk Management: Staying Safe on Campus."

Jesh Humphrey, senior associate general counsel in the University's Office of Legal Affairs, will talk about "Campus Safety and Security." In the afternoon, there will be concurrent sessions on "FERPA and Public Records," led by Humphrey; "Overview of Safety Policies," presented by Sarah Edwards,a higher education legal fellow; "Contract Negotiation Issues: Contracting Requirements and Why They Matter," led by Amy Kelso and David Broome, senior associate general counsel and general counsel for the University, respectively; and "Classroom Control, Disruptive Students, Disruptive Colleagues," presented by Jeff Jensen,  associate general counsel, UNC Charlotte.

A panel question-and-answer session that provides attendees the chance to ask about any legal issues of concern in higher education will conclude the symposium.
