Reception scheduled to honor retiring Venture director

Saturday, February 2, 2013

A retirement reception in honor of Sandy Kohn, director of the Venture outdoor experiential education program, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18, in the Prospector Building, Gold Room.

Kohn joined the Venture staff in 1984, and soon after, he took on the role of program director.  During his tenure, Kohn has made a number of significant contributions to student development and leadership.  He enhanced the high, low and mobile Team Challenge Course program; worked with staff to expand the reach of challenge course programs within UNC Charlotte and in the community; supported staff in the development of an outdoor orientation program piloting this year; and increased Venture’s trips and climbing programs.

Recently, Kohn was instrumental in the establishment of Venture’s newest academic component: a minor within the College of Health and Human Services Kinesiology Department.

This past fall, Kohn was recognized as one of UNC Charlotte’s Employee of the Year, and professionally, he received the prestigious Michael C. Stratton Award.  One staff member said of Kohn, “He sets the standards by which we can measure extraordinary service to the education profession, UNC Charlotte and the community.  He is respected and appreciated by those who work for him and learn from him.”

RSVPs are requested by Wednesday, Feb. 13; email Bonnie McDaniel at bjmcdani@uncc.edu.
