As director of stewardship in the University Advancement Division, Shelley Clayton strives to keep donors of the University happy by cultivating relationships with them and acknowledging their contributions.

In a nutshell, Clayton said she keeps donors happy. And while she works with benefactors to the University, her duties affect everyone at the institution.

“I’m working to build a comprehensive stewardship program in which all donors are appropriately thanked, informed and engaged with the University,” said Clayton. “This is first done by developing processes and procedures to ensure that no donor slips through the cracks. Further, I want to ensure that we’re stewarding our donors in a way that is meaningful for them and shows them the difference they are making at UNC Charlotte. I want everyone who gives to this University to feel appreciated and proud of supporting UNC Charlotte.”

Originally from Roxboro, Clayton attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English and political science. She moved to Charlotte and joined the University as donor stewardship coordinator. While working full time, she completed a master’s degree in public administration. After three years as donor stewardship coordinator for UNC Charlotte, she departed for Davidson College, where she served as the assistant director of donor relations. In April 2012, she returned to her graduate alma mater, UNC Charlotte.

As an individual who works with a wide group of people in the community, Clayton is aware of the importance of engagement and volunteerism. She likes to “give green” and volunteer whenever she can, but she noted it can be a challenge with a toddler at home.

She and husband Caine have a fantastic home life with children Rylee, 12, and Elsie, 18 months old, but sometimes the house can be a zoo with the family’s dog and cat – Leroy Brown and Elle Cat.

While work and life beyond the University can be busy, Clayton still manages to find time for one of her favorite activities – running.  She also enjoys reading; her favorite books are “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Handmaid's Tale.” She also likes the genres of futuristic science fiction, suspense and mystery.

As for the future, she plans to continue to grow the University’s stewardship program.
