The Counseling Center’s pre-doctoral internship program has received a seven-year reaccreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA).

For the program, Counseling Center staff members train doctoral-level psychology students in professional psychology identity and roles in preparation for careers in clinical or academic settings. The internship experience is the culmination of a doctoral degree and required for graduate students.

“It is comparable to the residency that a medical student completes at the end of their training,” said Terri Rhodes, assistant director for training in the Counseling Center who led the self-study in preparation for the APA site visit this summer that culminated in the program’s reaccreditation.

“Having this program in our center benefits both students and staff. It is one of the major draws for us, as staff members, to be involved in a training program of this caliber,” said Rhodes. “Providing education and training is one of our primary goals, so having an accredited program allows for us to attend to that goal and to attract the most talented students from around the country.”

UNC Charlotte’s program is one of 140 accredited pre-doctoral internship programs in college counseling centers across the country and one of three accredited internships in a counseling center in the state.
