The UNC Charlotte Model United Nations team recently brought home two of the top awards presented at the National Model United Nations Conference in Washington, D.C., winning an Outstanding Delegation Award and a Position Paper Award.

In its first time competing at this national conference, the eight delegates represented the country of Egypt and competed against teams from throughout the United States and other countries, including teams from Europe and South America. The awards continue the program’s winning record, which includes numerous awards at national and regional competitions.

“Model United Nations equips students with excellent skills in written and oral communication, diplomacy and negotiations,” said Model UN adviser Cindy Combs, a professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. “Their participation gives them a strong sense of global citizenship. Our team is a diverse group of students, with majors from many different colleges, including polticial science, nursing, engineering, education and business.”

An even larger UNC Charlotte Model UN team is training now to compete in the Southern Regional MUN Conference.

Model UN simulates the United Nations in an academic environment to help educate delegates about issues including current events, international relations and the United Nations.
