Staff members from the Graduate School recently participated in the campus-wide Giving Green Campaign through its fundraiser “Brownie and a Book for a Buck”.

Graduate School staff members baked dozens of brownies and blondies, plus brought in new and gently used books. The combination sold for $1.  In addition, bracelets from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation were sold outside the Fretwell Building.  Graduate School volunteers raised nearly $250.

The Giving Green Campaign allows students, faculty and staff members to support of a myriad of nonprofit organizations in efforts to enhance the quality of life for Charlotte’s citizens.  The Graduate School selected the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as a recipient.

Allison Brinkley, graduate admissions counselor for Belk College of Business, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at a young age while her brother was diagnosed seven years ago.  Additionally, the son of graduate admissions processor Melissa Peterson was diagnosed three years ago, at age 11.

“I am very grateful for the participation from everyone in the Graduate School for this cause,” said Peterson.  “Being that November is Diabetes Awareness month, the Graduate School selected a wonderful charity - near and dear to many of us.”

Linda Jean Jay, budget manager for the Graduate School, found the brownies weren’t the only attraction for the hungry students heading to class.

”There was also a lot of interest in the donated books,” Jay, Giving Green champion for the school, stated.  “Some folks acted like they had found treasure—for a buck!”
