The College of Arts + Architecture and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will partner to present “Spirits Rise: A Ghost Film Series.” It is inspired by two books by Department of Theatre professor Mark Pizzato “Ghosts of Theatre and Cinema in the Brain” and “Inner Theatres of Good and Evil: The Mind’s Staging of Gods, Angels and Devils.”
The film series will open at ImaginOn: The Joe and Joan Martin Center at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, with a screening of “The Innocents” (1961), starring Deborah Kerr.
It continues Oct. 13 with the 2000 feature “Hamlet,” starring Ethan Hawke. The series then moves to UNC Charlotte Center City for the final three screenings: “The Others” (2001), scheduled for Oct. 27, starring Nicole Kidman; “The Ring” (2002) on Nov. 10, which is a remake of the Japanese horror film, “Ringu;” and “Macbeth” (2010) on Nov. 17, starring Patrick Stewart.
All screenings are at 2 p.m. Pizzato and Sam Shapiro, adult system program coordinator for Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, will lead brief discussions on the films. Special guest lecturer Andrew Hartley, UNC Charlotte Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare, will lead the Nov. 17 discussion. Hartley’s recent book “Macbeth, A Novel” co-authored with David Hewson, is a Kindle bestseller and was nominated for an “Audie” award for its audio version, read by Alan Cumming.
