Riley Felts, a redshirt senior, is an All-American pole vaulter who finished as national runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Boston, Friday, March 8. She posted a record clearance of 14'9" (4.50m), the highest in UNC Charlotte history.
What are you studying at UNC Charlotte?
I am a redshirt senior and will graduate with my master’s degree in geoenvironmental engineering. I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2022 from UNC Charlotte in civil engineering with a minor in mathematics and earth and environmental sciences.
What went through your head when you found out you broke a school record and were the national runner-up in pole vault?
The excitement was overwhelming! It was such an amazing feeling to place second at such a competitive national meet. This accomplishment means so much to me, and I am grateful for the experience; it is something I will never forget!
What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete at UNC Charlotte?
Being a student-athlete is an incredibly rewarding experience. It demands discipline, hard work and has helped me work toward my goals and continue to strive for greatness. I’ve gotten to connect with some amazing people and have made so many memories that I will always cherish.
How long have you been pole vaulting? What do you love about the sport?
I started pole vaulting as a sophomore in high school when a friend invited me to a pole vault clinic. I was immediately hooked! I love vaulting because it is genuinely fun, and you can always work on something to help improve your jump and clear higher bars. It is an extremely fulfilling sport.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not studying or training?
I love going out to eat, watching TV and spending time with my friends. I enjoy visiting my family and seeing my adorable Shih Tzu, Brady!
What's a fun fact about you many people may not know?
I graduated high school a year early and started college at the age of 17. Also, every week I go to Crumbl Cookies and try their new flavors. Some might say I’m a cookie addict.
