Niners celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving

Faculty and staff celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving
Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday in October. I thought it would be great to get together with other UNC Charlotte Canadians this year to celebrate. And, it just so happened that Thanksgiving coincided with Niner Niner Nation Week and the faculty and staff social at the Wine Vault. We all had a great time, celebrating our culture and our University.

But, let me take a step back.

I'm originally Canadian. I immigrated in 2000 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2012. Ever since I came to UNC Charlotte in August 2019, I have been running into other Canadians across campus. And they would  let me know of someone else they knew on campus who was Canadian, married to a Canadian, had worked in Canada, etc. I soon discovered that UNC Charlotte is little Canada!

So, I benefit from two Thanksgivings annually. The Canadian version has similar food traditions, but perhaps 50% less marshmallows!
