Six years ago, Anna Helms ’12 became the director of constituent relations in the Office of External Relations and Partnerships. But first, she was a UNC Charlotte student and served as the student government administrative assistant. Learn how her role impacts campus, her favorite Niner event and her involvement in bringing football to UNC Charlotte.
Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte?
I foster, support and expand the University’s relationships with local, state and federal elected and government officials, as well as with the business and corporate community. Our office advocates for the University’s priorities and strengthens its mission to deliver on its promise to become a top-tier research university. From welcoming government representatives to campus to providing information and access, we forge the link between UNC Charlotte and public representatives.
What is something about constituent relations that people might not know?
I’ve been able to see and be a part of transforming campus. Some of the projects and initiatives we have advocated for during my time include funding for the Science Building, implementation and opening of light rail, investment in the conference center at the UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel, securing on-campus voting sites for elections and expansion of academic programs.
What do you like to do when you aren't working?
I like attending sporting events for the Charlotte 49ers, Panthers, Knights and the Atlanta Braves. I’m also a frequent visitor of the library and bookstore. I enjoy reading nonfiction and biographies, shopping at thrift stores and spending time catching up with family and friends.
What's a fun fact about you many people may not know?
I attended UNC Charlotte before we had football. In 2008, there was a student-led “March to the End Zone” campus event where a goal post was carried throughout campus. We chanted, “We want football,” and I was a part of that effort. Every time I attend a home game or go by the stadium, it brings back memories of when I advocated for the University and its future.
In college, I was an intern for Richard Hudson ’96 during his first campaign. He is the first and only UNC Charlotte alumnus to serve in Congress. It is a full circle moment to have interned for him and now be able to work with him to advance the University.
What are you most looking forward to as the fall semester starts?
There isn’t necessarily one event or item, but I generally look forward to the beginning of the fall semester as that brings back the hustle and bustle to campus.
What’s your favorite event/celebration on campus?
Although a newer tradition, my favorite would have to be Niner Nation Week. It is a week full of celebrating the University and ends with homecoming, which I look forward to as an alumna, as I know I will be able to see and catch up with friends.
What advice do you have for new Niner employees?
Get out of your office and walk the campus when the weather is nice! Not only do we have a beautiful campus, but being able to know where buildings and services are on campus is beneficial, and you will likely run into a familiar face. Download your digital campus ID card; it’s a lifesaver!
