Derrick Gibbs is the University’s fire and life safety manager, and he has been on campus for almost nine years. Learn how his team keeps UNC Charlotte a safe place to learn and work, what he does during his off time and his favorite sports teams.

Can you describe your role at UNC Charlotte

My role is to ensure compliance with occupational regulations and manage hazards that pose a risk to people, property and the environment. Some of the programs that I manage are aerial lifts, automated external defibrillators, building emergency evacuation plans, event safety, fire safety, forklifts, welding, cutting and brazing and the safety monitor program.

What’s something about your job that most people don’t know?

I enjoy working with my team. It’s rewarding knowing that the Environmental Health and Safety Office positively impacts the safety of 3,700 employees and nearly 30,000 students at UNC Charlotte.

Are there any projects that are keeping you and your team busy this summer?

One of the main projects keeping my team busy is coordinating and conducting fire drills for housing and residence life facilities, athletics and academic buildings. My team is also in the process of installing and conducting AED inspections throughout campus.

What do you like to do when you aren't working?

When I am not working, I enjoy playing chess, watching movies, attending NFL or NBA games and attempting to bowl or play golf.

What's a fun fact about you many people may not know

I am a Carolina Panthers and Boston Red Sox fan.

What’s your favorite place to travel

I enjoy spending time with my family in Wilmington, North Carolina.
