Wednesday, April 5, 2017

The Lee College of Engineering’s Matthew Davies is among the 2017 recipients of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.

This annual honor recognizes one professor at each of North Carolina’s public institutions. Each of the recipients will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize. Awards will be presented by a Board of Governors member during each campus’ spring graduation ceremony.

A professor of mechanical engineering and engineering science, Davies received the 2016 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence – one of the University’s most prestigious accolades.

Davies, who joined UNC Charlotte and its Lee College of Engineering in 2001, has an instructional approach aimed at the expansion of knowledge, technical capability and understanding of mechanical and optical engineering principles; it is learner-centered; and it relies on continuous feedback between teacher and student. He completed a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Cornell University. His bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is from Carnegie Mellon University.
